In Bern between 1933 and 1940, as an exile in his own chosen homeland, Paul Klee created a magnificent late oeuvre which must count as one of the most significant phenomena of it kind in modern art. In December 1933 Paul Klee, having been dismissed from his post at the Düsseldorf Academy, left Germany for exile in Bern. His work up to that date has already reacted intensely to the totally changed situation which prevailed after the coming to power of the Nazis. The colorist magic of the Düsseldorf period gave way to a more abrupt working method, which was suspicious of profound perfection of form. In 1935 he contracted as incurable disease, which turned this rich “crisis art” into a something frankly eschatological. Production of pictures virtually ceased in 1936, but 1937 saw the start of the late work as such. In the combinations of his typical existential language of signs against luminous backgrounds, Klee made space for the encounter of the fragile “condition humane” with visionary phenomena of the infinite.
